Cambridge-based research charity Alzheimer’s Research UK were looking to move from their cramped Shelford offices south of Cambridge. Alium assisted in the evaluation of a number of properties before a lease was agreed on over 5,000 sq ft of office space on a single floor of the Riverside development at Granta Park.

Because the organisation has such a strong emphasis on non-hierarchical communication Alium proposed a predominantly open-plan layout but with the close proximity of meeting and support functions. User group consultations resulted in a bold yet simple design which also reflected the organisation's colours and branding. Further consultation also took place to ensure fabric and carpet patterns did not have the potential to further disorientate visitors who might ave the condition.

Following a separate feasibility study into work-station use it was decided to purchase new bench style desking rather than re-use the clients existing corner-workstations. The new desk footprint not only worked better with the buildings existing structural grid and lighting plan and afforded greater staff interaction it also meant that ARUK reduced its overall spatial requirements by nearly 20%; generating leasehold savings that more than covered the cost of the new furniture.

Acting as Principle Contractor as well as Designer, Alium undertook the full fit-out of the suite before the charity moved in. However ARUK’s continued growth and rapidly increasing head-count meant that they soon required additional space. Alium revisited the designs in order to integrate an additional 3000 sq ft. of office space into the ARUK demise.

Following the removal of the floors central access lobby a new reception was introduced with the additional office and meeting space flowing seamlessly from the original fit-out. Alium were once again engaged as both designers and contractors and have more recently continued to provide on-going support and input for a variety of smaller projects.
